In 1998, NCJW members worked diligently to bring a Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure back to Austin. The 5K race held the first Sunday in November quickly became Austin's largest race with more than 15,000 runners and walkers. It raises more than $600,000, three-quarters of which stays in Austin to fund equipment and materials for breast cancer prevention. A mobile mammography unit, for example, was purchased to assist women in rural areas in getting mammograms.
Race organizers formed a Susan G. Komen affiliate to increase breast cancer prevention services and NCJW members have served on this board. NCJW has played a large part in the education components of the affiliate, hosting nationally-know authors and speakers who have written about the cause.
