What a fun baby shower we hosted today at Refugee Services of Texas! Thanks so much to all our generous members and friends who bought over 70 gifts for four families, from baby shampoo to car seats and everything in between. Thanks also to our shower team who shopped, baked, wrapped gifts, and organized to make everything so lovely. The families will forever be grateful for the love and friendship offered through these gifts. Special thanks to InKind Inc at the Westover Church of Christ who donated five beautiful and bountiful, huge baby baskets filled with all kinds of baby items including handmade clothing. This made our day truly a community event, and we and the families are forever thankful for you, our loving community partners.
At our September 12th luncheon, Lauren Rizzo, Coordinator of Volunteer Services at Refugee Services of Texas, spoke on the topic of services and programs that her non-profit organization provides in Austin.

Close to 20 NCJW volunteers went through refugee tutor training today at Burnet Middle School. Thanks to Betsy M. for leading our training and to our fearless leader, Lisa S., for all her hard work designing the program and organizing us, with passion and commitment! Still room for more tutors- no experience needed!! More information below.
TUTORING OPPORTUNITY, NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED!
If you’re looking for a flexible, hands-on opportunity, NCJW needs you!
We are excited to announce a new program offering English language tutoring to Arab-immigrant students at Burnet Middle School. This effort evolved from our work with Refugee Services of Texas and the refugee family NCJW helped this spring. Volunteers worked with the children to help them learn English and acclimate to their new environment.
The schools were so appreciative that they asked us if we could tutor more students. So, as is our way, NCJW has stepped up. We tutored six students this spring and would love to help even more this school year. To do this, we need more volunteer tutors! You do not need special skills – if you can read, you can help! Most of us are not teachers, yet we have found ways to engage our students and find holes in their vocabulary that need filling. Most students know how to read, they just don’t understand what they are reading! Tutoring will begin once students are identified in early September, and we will continue to add students throughout the year as they are identified and if we have enough volunteers.
- Volunteers can tutor as much or as little as they like
- Easy online scheduling
- Varying times and days for tutoring
- You will be directly helping students in need
